The Kenya Forest Service partners with Big Ship Organization for Mazingira Day

The Kenya Forest Service in partnership with Big Ship Organization conducted a cleanup exercise in Mikindani Ward (Jomvu Constituency) Mombasa as part of preparations for the upcoming mangrove tree planting activity to mark Mazingira Day on 10th October 2026.

The exercise was led by the County Forest Conservator Mombasa, Mr. Benard Wahome alongside Big Ship Organization Executive Director Bosco Juma. The activity brought together National Government Administration Officers, local community members and other stakeholders highlighting the importance of collective action in protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems.

Mr. Wahome emphasized the importance of proper waste management and adherence to riparian reserve regulations. He noted that responsible management of these areas is essential not only for protecting fragile coastal ecosystems but also for safeguarding communities from the potential impacts of high tides and floods particularly during the El Niño period.

The activity also highlighted the value of collaboration between government institutions, non-state actors and local communities in advancing environmental conservation and building resilient coastal communities.

The cleanup exercise sets the stage for the mangrove tree planting activity on 10th October reaffirming the shared commitment to environmental stewardship and the restoration of Kenya’s coastal ecosystems.
