KFS participated in an inception workshop organised by PARIS21 that focused on supporting climate action in Kenya by integrating data from government agencies to develop a roadmap for the establishment of a robust Kenyan Climate Change Data Ecosystem.
The workshop leveraged synergies from climate change experts, scientists, and statisticians drawn from entities that included the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Meteorological Department, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, National Environment Management Authority, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock among many other sectors.
Noting that the country has been on the receiving end of climate emergencies like floods and droughts which greviously impact on our environment, the economy, and society at large, access to timely, high-quality data has been underscored as a crucial necessity to guide evidence-based actions.
The Fourth Medium Term Plan also emphasizes the need to integrate climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts across all sectors. Consequently, developing frameworks to strengthen climate change data ecosystem to address challenges like data gaps and coordination issues is essential.
Representing KFS, Ms Patricia Kitheka from the Climate Change Division stressed the importance of consolidating datasets from various institutions into a robust database. She noted that this would enable faster action, early prediction, and more informed measures to guide adaptation and mitigation policies.
