During an awareness workshop on disposal of forest plantation materials, conducted by KFS, in Nakuru today, Forest Industry Investors within Nakuru County called for lifting of the moratorium banning disposal of forest plantations, arguing that forests plantation are established for commercial purposes, therefore KFS should be allowed to dispose these resources for socio-economic good of people and the nation.
They decried the devastating effects the ban has had on them, calling for immediate lifting, which they noted has resulted into mature and over-mature plantation trees going to waste through decomposition and wind falls.
Forest plantation establishment is entrenched in the Forest Conservation and Management Act 2016 that provides that all plantation forests in a public forest shall be managed in a sustainable manner for the production of wood and other forest products and services for commercial purposes
The stakeholders noted that the country is loosing a lot of revenue due to the ban and called on the government to act on the matter. They also committed to continue engaging in tree growing activities in line with the government 15 billion tree growing agenda, to mitigate adverse effects of climate change that continue to recke havoc across the country.
