Today the Nanyuki Community Forest Association held elections to elect its executive and management committees. This follows several complaints that had been raised by the members over mismanagement. According to Justus Njega the Nanyuki Forest station Manager, the CFA had deteriorated due to lack of transparency by the officials and the election was necessary to address these concerns.
Nanyuki Forest Station covers over nine thousand homes and the forest adjacent communities identified several user rights they utilize including tree nurseries, eco tourism, bee keeping, herbal medicine, grazing, collection of firewood among other uses. Mr Peter Kaigi Mwangi was elected as the CFA Chairman in the election that was presided over by the Assistant County Commissioner Fridah Muringo and the area chief Charles Rukunga.
Ms Beatrice Mbula Deputy CCF(Natural Forest Conservation) and Josyline Thambu CFA Officer, facilitated the election proceedings including a consultative meeting one day prior. Approximately 1,100 people registered as members of the CFA and following the election of new officials, it is anticipated there will be improved co- management of the forest resource as stipulated in the Forest Act, 2016.
