SAW MILLING UNIT

This college has been training certificate and diploma courses in forestry and the mandate has been extended to cover training courses for forest industry workers. This is to guarantee competent execution of forestry industry work to enable balance between preservation of our forests and rural development. The institute is therefore planning to establish vocational and technician courses in sawmilling for training forest industry workers and other managerial staff.

The College has recently acquired a modern saw mill from Kenya Forest service.

OBJECTIVES OF SAWMILLING UNIT

The objective of this unit is to be training skilled workers for:

1. Timber harvesting(loggers, and logging machine operators).
2. Sawmilling (saw doctors, sawyers, maintenance mechanics).
3. Wood work (carpenters & joiners, wood based panels).
4. Wood preservation.
5. Timber grading .
6. Managerial staff for forest harvesting and saw milling.

COURSES TO BE OFFERED

1. Saw doctoring.
2. Logging course for loggers .
3. Logging machine operators.
4. Sawing machine operators (Sawyers).
5. Timber graders.
6. Timber treatment plant operators .
7. Furniture production and finishing course for Carpenters & Joiners.
8. Diploma in sawmilling for sawmills supervisors (The trainees will take all the common and grade courses in detail under the proposed 2 year programme with special emphasis on marketing, entrepreneurship, business economics & financial accounting, project planning and management, clean production in  wood processing plants).
